How Much is a Seat on that Board?

One of the most common questions I get from nonprofit board leadership is:  "Should there be a minimum donation for board members?"  My answer is usually:  "Yes, and no."  Yes, at a minimum the donation should be personally generous and meaningful.  It should be the biggest charitable donation that board member makes in the course of the year.  However, one cannot quantify "personally generous."

The rules are a bit different among New York City's most prestigious cultural boards as Robin Pogrebin reported in Saturday's New York Times, in a great article entitled Trustees Find Cultural Board Seats Are Still Highly Coveted Luxury Items. Check it out to see the current prices of admission  to boards such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art ($10 million), the NY Public Library ($ million), snd Lincoln Center ($250,000).

However money isn't everything and as you'll read in the article, it's also critically important to demonstrate a significant passion for the cause, make connections and not be hesitant about asking others to support your organization.

Further, the article also discusses the importance of making expectations of each board member crystal clear  before he or she comes on board.
